Beyond the Meteors, We Found Something Else...
On April 21, 2025, we set up two special low-light cameras in our backyard, 26 feet apart, hoping to capture the beauty of the Lyrid meteor shower. And while we did catch some shooting stars streaking across the night sky, we also recorded something... unexpected. Objects that defied easy explanation and demanded a closer look.

In addition to meteors, we caught several "Lyrid Objects," as we've come to call them, crossing our videos as very dim objects, apparently reflecting the street and yard lights in the area. We applied 3D analysis to the footage of the most clearly defined V-shaped object, crunching the numbers to estimate its size, speed, and altitude. The results? Intriguing, to say the least! This object was truly bizarre and totally unexpected.
This article briefly describes what we recorded and how we studied it. Once you understand why we're still mystified, we'll guide you to our companion Youtube video so you can see for yourself.
Chasing Shooting Stars
The reason for our late-night vigil was the Lyrid meteor shower, radiating from the constellation Lyra. While the shower wasn't as intense as we'd hoped for - we weren't out during its peak hours of 3 AM to 5 AM, opting for an earlier 1 AM bedtime - it still offered a nice glimpse of cosmic debris burning up in our atmosphere. As the evening wore on, we caught more than meteors, not discovering their presence in the videos until the next morning when we reviewed the footage from each camera.
The Unexplained Anomalous Objects
The next day we discovered our videos captured two distinct types of unusual objects. All of these objects were too dim to be noticed with our eyes during the night, but our extreme low-light cameras (identical Sony A7Sii set to very high ISO) showed them clearly crossing the sky in various directions, quickly and steadily in each case.
The first type appeared as multiple objects seemingly moving in very tight formations, such as straight lines or small clusters of 3 or 4. We captured several instances of these, with one clip showing four distinct objects in a straight row ascending to the right. Another showed a cluster of three, possibly four, very close together in a rough diamond pattern. What made them anomalous? They were moving too quickly and too close to be in orbit, and they were dark and only barely lit by ground lights. We only had one camera trained on them, making our guesses as to their altitude, size, and distance impossible to verify. For now, they remain unidentified.
The second type was even more compelling: rigid, V-shaped objects. At 12:53 AM we were fortunate to capture one of these in better detail on both cameras, allowing for detailed mathematical analysis of its 3D flight characteristics.
Analyzing the Best V-Shaped Object
By carefully examining the moment this object passed the star Delta Lyrae in the Lyra constellation, we could see a parallax shift between the two cameras, confirming the object was significantly closer than the distant stars. In fact, at 26 feet separation between our cameras, the object would be much closer than most airplanes for us to detect this amount of visual shift.
To determine its precise location and size, we used three nearby stars - Vega, Sulafat, and Aladfar - as reference points. By calculating the angles to these stars from each camera's perspective at the same exact moment (synchronized very exactly using meteors captured on both feeds), we could triangulate the object's position and velocity in the sky using some specialized astronomical calculations.
The numbers revealed that the object was approximately 1469 feet from camera 1 and 1464 feet from camera 2. Its elevation was around 821 feet above the ground. The estimated span of one of its two "wings" was between 42 and 48 feet. Its speed was calculated at about 63 miles per hour. While these figures have a margin of error of +/- 2% based on controlled measurement experiments, they provide a valuable ballpark estimate.
What Wasn't It?
While these numbers are interesting, they don't immediately tell us what the object was . So, we started by considering what it wasn't . We ran through the top ten most common misidentified objects:
- Aircraft: Ruled out due to the lack of navigation lights.
- Weather Balloons: The size and shape didn't match.
- Satellites/Space Debris: The speed and low altitude were inconsistent with orbital mechanics.
- Atmospheric Phenomena: No thunder, lightning, or other known atmospheric events were present.
- Astronomical Objects: Our measurements ruled out stars or planets.
- Military/Classified Tech: Remains a possibility.
- Optical Illusions: The two-camera setup helps to rule this out.
- Birds/Insects/Bats: We'll revisit this.
- Flares/Fireworks: The object's movement and rigid structure didn't fit this.
- Hoaxes/Misinterpretations: We believe our analysis is based on genuine data.
This leaves us with military/classified technology, birds/insects/bats, or something truly unknown.
Was It a Mysterious (and Technically Illegal) Drone?
Considering military, or potentially illegal technology, the rigid structure and multiple similar sightings are noteworthy. While drone activity is prevalent in recent news, commercial drones typically have much smaller wingspans (maxing out around 20 feet) than what we measured. The speed aligns with some drones, but the size discrepancy is significant. Drones require specific FAA lighting, and these objects had no lighting on them at all. Predator and Raptor military reconnaissance drones fly much higher, and it makes little sense that these would be tasked to fly in such quantities and so low over our suburban environment.
Was It a Bird, or Flock of Birds?
What about birds? No single bird is anywhere near the size we estimated (an eagle's wingspan is around 8 feet). Could it have been a flock of birds? Geese, for example, fly in V formations (called skeins) at night during migration, which is currently happening, and their flight speed is around 60 mph, which matches our data. However, a perfectly rigid, symmetrical V-shape appearing multiple times in a row seems highly unlikely for a flock of birds. Furthermore, birds flap their wings; the object we observed appeared rigid and fixed in shape, resembling a V-shaped boomerang. We heard no typical "honking" of geese calls during our filming in the quiet of the night.
Left With a Mystery
After ruling out the more mundane explanations to the best of our ability, we are left with a genuine mystery. What was this rigid, dimly lit, V-shaped object flying over our neighborhood late at night?
